I’ve been working with writer Kara Barrett to develop covers for her modern fantasy comic, The End is  Totally Nigh. Kara wanted to use this first cover to highlight the main character- she said the focus was on the dangerous aspects of her personality. Because so much of this title deals with demons fire was a big thing, as you can guess.

I just finished up a new sample piece that I’ll be using as a promotion for sports magazines this winter.

My friend, drinking buddy and fellow illustrator Chris “Patch”ell released his autobiographical sketchbook-journal, I Put the Can in Cancer, at the Nichols Berg Gallery last night. His book is a collection of drawings and writing 2 years in the making that details his fight with cancer of the tongue, and is aimed to help young people who have been diagnosed with cancer themselves. He deservedly sold out of all of the copies he had that night (I’m one of the lucky ones who got a copy!), but thankfully more are on their way. An author commissioned a cover for a comic book proposal tentatively titled Feratu. There wasn’t much discussion as to the actual story, but she had a very clear idea of what she wanted and left it up to me to execute.

There was a good deal of back and forth over the sketches and the client was pretty particular about what she wanted. Sometimes it was more designy element in the hair, then less and so on. Thankfully she was pleased with the nature of the finish, so that was approved without revisions (yaaay).

I was really excited to get a call from Minh Uong at the Sunday Business section of the New York Times last week. He had a story about Rhode Island and its financial trouble and came to me with the idea of a postcard with the state’s landmarks in a state of decay. Even better, it was to be the cover!

Finished portrait of my cat, Amos, for the PAWS charity show at Digital Ferret.

I was really excited to be asked to donate work to the show because my own cats were originally from a litter my old roommate fostered. They’re an integral part of my and my girlfriend’s lives at this point and I’ve become one of those people who has far too many pictures of his cats on his phone and computer.

The sketches are portraits of our 2 cats, Amos & McKinley, with a Pennsylvania Dutch motif. Much of my summer was spent driving through central Pennsylvania and seeing these hex designs on the sides of barns, cars and other home goods in the country.
