Over a year ago I was contacted by the folks at ImagineFX, a major fantasy and digital art magazine, about having my work featured in an upcoming issue. This is a magazine that I’ve bought for my own use, so I was pretty thrilled. With past contributors like Joao Ruas, Justin Sweet and John Howe I was proud to be invited to have my work on its pages.

To my surprise, I got an email from the editor from the Philadelphia Weekly. Apparently one of the covers I did for them last year was picked as an honorable mention in Illustration by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association! I don’t know if the comes with some sort of trophy, plaque or proof of any kind, but I’m happy to receive the recognition. It’s especially nice since I didn’t get to enter my work into the last round of illustration annuals like Spectrum or American Illustration. With any luck, I’ll have more entries for next year.
My warm ups have been proceeding pretty well. These are more quick studies that are done from national park landscapes, paintings and portraits.
I’m looking forward to trying to implement what I’ve been learning into new work. Fantasy Flight Games gave me such an opportunity recently, but at that point I had only just began to introduce some of this more painterly work into those illustrations. Maybe the next batch will get even more interesting.
I just wrapped up the latest issue of Alex de Campi’s fantasy comic Valentine. I’ve been doing colors since the inker/penciler/all-around-awesome-drawer Christine Larsen handed over the reigns in issue 5. Above are some of panels from issue 10, all of the series is available, now for free, on their website.
